Why electronics jargon trips up family shoppers
Product listings for TVs, laptops, and phones are packed with abbreviations and numbers that look meaningful but rarely come with explanations. A TV ad might list "4K, 120Hz, HDR10, HDMI 2.1" in a single line. A router box might read "Wi-Fi 6, dual-band, 5GHz." Without a working vocabulary, it's hard to tell which numbers translate into a better experience and which are mostly marketing.

HDMI
A cable and port standard that carries high-definition audio and video between devices such as TVs, consoles, and laptops. Different HDMI versions support different maximum resolutions and frame rates.
Refresh rate (Hz)
The number of times per second a display redraws its image, measured in hertz. Higher refresh rates produce smoother motion, which is most noticeable in sports, gaming, and action content.
RAM
Random Access Memory is the short-term working memory a processor uses for active tasks. More RAM allows a device to handle more simultaneous processes without slowing down.
SSD
A solid-state drive stores data on flash memory with no moving parts. SSDs load files faster and are more durable under physical impact than traditional spinning hard drives.
Codec
A compression format for encoding and decoding audio or video files. A playback device must support the same codec used to encode a file in order to play it natively.
HDR
High Dynamic Range is a display and content standard that widens the range of brightness levels and colors a screen can reproduce. It requires both a compatible display and HDR-encoded source material.
Bluetooth
A short-range wireless standard used to connect peripherals such as headphones, speakers, and keyboards to a host device. Later versions improve range, speed, and connection reliability.
Wi-Fi band
The radio frequency range a wireless network uses to transmit data. The 2.4GHz band offers longer range; the 5GHz band offers faster speeds over shorter distances.
Connectivity and wireless terms
Connectivity specs determine how your devices talk to each other and to the internet. Getting them wrong can mean slow streaming, dropped audio, or accessories that won't pair reliably.
- HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the cable standard that carries audio and video between devices. HDMI 2.0 handles 4K at 60 frames per second; HDMI 2.1 adds bandwidth for 4K at 120fps and 8K content. Most current TVs and game consoles use at least one of these versions.
- Bluetooth versions matter for audio quality and range. Bluetooth 5.0 and later extend the reliable range to roughly 30 feet in typical home conditions and improve connection stability compared to older versions.
- Wi-Fi generations are now labeled with numbers. Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) is common in mid-range routers. Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) handles more simultaneous device connections with less slowdown, which matters in households with many smart devices. Wi-Fi 6E adds a 6GHz band for even less congestion, though fewer devices currently support it.
- Dual-band vs. tri-band: A dual-band router broadcasts on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies. The 2.4GHz band has longer range but lower throughput; 5GHz is faster but shorter-range. Tri-band routers add a second 5GHz or a 6GHz band to reduce congestion when many devices connect at once.

Display and audio specs
Display specifications can be the trickiest because manufacturers sometimes use the same term to mean slightly different things across product lines.

- Resolution refers to the number of pixels in a display. 1080p (Full HD) has 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. 4K (Ultra HD) has approximately 3,840 by 2,160 pixels. At typical living-room viewing distances, the jump from 1080p to 4K is visible on screens 50 inches and larger.
- Refresh rate (Hz) is how many times per second the screen redraws its image. A 60Hz display refreshes 60 times per second; a 120Hz display does so 120 times. Higher refresh rates reduce motion blur during fast-moving content like sports and gaming.
- HDR (High Dynamic Range) expands the range of brightness and color a display can produce. HDR10 is the baseline open standard. Dolby Vision is a licensed format that adjusts picture settings scene by scene. Both require HDR-encoded source content to make a visible difference.
- Nits measure peak brightness. A TV at 400 nits handles moderate ambient light well; 1,000 nits or more is where HDR content starts to look notably brighter and more vivid.
- Codec (audio/video) is the compression format used to encode a media file. Common audio codecs include AAC and aptX. Common video codecs include H.264 and H.265 (HEVC). A device must support the same codec as the source file to play it without converting.
Processing and storage terms
Speed and storage specs set the ceiling on what a device can do and how long it stays useful.
- GHz (gigahertz) measures processor clock speed: how many cycles per second a chip can execute. A higher GHz number generally means faster individual tasks, but chip architecture matters more than clock speed alone across different processor families.
- RAM (Random Access Memory) holds the data a processor is actively using. More RAM lets a device run more applications at once without slowing down. For a family laptop used for schoolwork and video calls, 8GB of RAM is a practical floor; 16GB is more comfortable with many browser tabs open.
- SSD vs. HDD: A solid-state drive (SSD) stores data on flash memory with no moving parts, making it faster to read and write data and more resistant to drops. A hard disk drive (HDD) uses a spinning magnetic platter and is slower but typically cheaper per gigabyte. Most current laptops ship with SSDs; external HDDs remain common for bulk backup storage.
- eMMC is a type of flash storage soldered directly onto a device's circuit board, common in budget laptops and tablets. It is slower than an SSD and cannot be upgraded, so capacity at purchase is permanent.
